I believe you when you say the light is not switched in to the 'on' position. It's your car. Is it a double or single fixture? Your owners manual just says push switch or lens to turn on or off for 'room lamp'. It shows two different fixtures, a single lamp and a double. The double you push the lens. The single lamp type you push the switch button. Other than that, sorry, all I can find. Chapter 4 Page 80.

The service department just called me back for this exact same problem. The entire fixture needs to be replaced, which they quoted me at $200 and would have to order the part. No thanks, I'll leave the switch in the "off" position. (The dome light has three positions: Off, Automatic, or On. The light will STAY on for eternity with the car on, off, driving, etc. if the switch is in the Automatic or On position.)

I'm having the same problem with my 2012, the light stays on and will not go, when all doors are closed. It stays on and I've tried very thing. So now I've place the switch in the off position. This seems like it's a on going problem with all Sonatas.

I have a 2012 Sonata, luckily I just noticed it does the same thing. I went around and closed the doors and also there is a blue light in that switch mechanism. Wonder what is that for? I tapped the switch mechanism(mine is a double lamp) and it seems to be a short.

It's a $50 part then you can buy genuine oem... it's only 2 screws simply undo take the switch out put in new part and put the 2 screws back in and fixed dont let the dealer charge you $200 for a 3mins and 22 second job!!!!

2012 dome light stays on in AUTO mode with doors closed. Because this is a switch I never move off AUTO, I removed the two mounting screws hidden by the sunglass holder door, carefully pulled down unit from the windshield side first and disconnected the electrical plug. Once the unit is extracted, move the switch to the OFF position, this will clear an opening on the ON electrical leg, cut a thin strip of electrical tape and apply over the ON leg, I used an exacto blade to line up and apply the tape. Plug the unit back in and test before reinstalling the unit.

I had given up after trying all those things. I was too cheap to buy a new fixture and had simply left it in the OFF poisition. More of a pain than i realizes. Perhaps the inner electrical tape would work if i could figure it out; but i finally just put it all back together and turned the toggle to OFF and tucked a piece of cardboard in on the left to keep the toggle from going to the always on position. Voila!

Put the 3-position switch into the "off" position. When dark, push the lamp on to see and when you "lock" the car, the interior lamp will go out in a few seconds. When you enter the car again, the light will come on so just push and turn it off.

If you would like to fix this problem instead of buying a new one, here is how I just fixed it on my wife's 2011 sonata. It takes about 4 minutes and you need a Philips and a small flathead screwdriver.1 Open sunglass compartment and unscrew the 2 philips head screws (there are only 2 holding it up).2 Gently remove the dome console from the remaining clips holding it up and unplug the power cable.*Cause of issue * On the underside of the switch there is a metal plate with a notch on both sides that makes contact with the circuit in each position. What's happening is when the notch is in the off position a piece of the metal plate is too close to the circuit causing it to to stay lit in the off position.*The Fix*3 With the switch in the off position, take a small flathead screwdriver and bend the metal plate away from the circuit applying light pressure to the right of the off notch compressing the spring that holds it in place.4 Remove screwdriver and check to see if the metal plate is still making contact in the off position. If it is, repeat previous step until it's not. If it's not making contact, reinstall the console.I hope this helps!

In ALL these cases, people are referring to the FRONT courtesy lamp. This is happening only to my REAR passenger overhead dual lamp ( We have sunroof black glass LTD version) To complicate this, the rear overhead dual courtesy lamp DOES go out if left alone for about 10 minutes. This seems to me to be a computer timer control issue. I will hit the remote lock button twice and see what happens as advised, AND take out THAT lamp to look for an errant conductivity problem as well. Thanks for having this forum!
