My goal this year is to prepare as many crockpot thanksgiving dishes as I can!

Thanksgiving is a fantastic holiday that always fills up with craziness, worry, fighting over the oven, and a bit more craziness after all that.

This year, I aim to help everyone have less stress on Thanksgiving and lessen the fighting over the oven space with crockpot recipes!

The first recipe we share in our Crock-Pot Thanksgiving series is Crock Pot Sweet Potato Casserole!

Oh my goodness, hold onto your taste buds! This Slow Cooker Sweet Potato Casserole is simply amazing! It is amazing for a couple of reasons:

  1. You do not need to use the oven
  2. It is crazy easy to make
  3. You prep the dish and walk away, and the Crock-Pot takes care of all the work
  4. It tastes simply Ah-Mazing! I mean, seriously, over-the-top, love at first taste, Ah-Mazing

Ingredients

Here is a quick overview of the simple ingredients needed to make Crockpot Sweet Potato Casserole! The printable recipe card at the bottom of the post includes specific measurements and step-by-step instructions.

  • Uncooked/Raw Sweet Potatoes
  • Brown Sugar
  • Butter
  • Orange Juice
  • Pumpkin Pie Spice
  • Salt
  • Heavy Cream or Milk
  • Vanilla Extract
  • Mini Marshmallows

Optional Add-Ins: Cinnamon streusel, Nutmeg, Pecans/pecan topping, walnuts, almonds

Equipment Needed

  • Teaspoons/Tablespoons/Measuring Cups
  • Vegetable Peeler: You will want a good vegetable peeler that is comfortable. I love this OXO peeler and use it all the time.
  • Mixing Bowls
  • CrockPot: We suggest using a CrockPot with a digital timer that automatically switches the temperature to warm after a set time to ensure your dinner cooks to perfection without stressing about cooking time.
  • Hamburger Mix and Chop: My favorite Hamburger Mix and Chop works fantastic for mashing sweet potatoes. You can also use a potato masher, but I grab my Mix and Chop for almost everything. It works great for giving sweet potatoes a stir or mash. They will be nice and tender. A hand mixer will also work.
  • Slow Cooker Insert/Liners: These inserts work great if you want to save time with cleanup.

Preparation and Storage

Make Ahead: Getting your ingredients ready beforehand makes this recipe easy! Plan prep time to peel the sweet potatoes or ask for help if anyone else is home when you’re cooking. You can also make the brown sugar topping the day before serving.

Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

Freezing/How to Freeze: I would leave off the marshmallows if you plan to freeze leftovers. They do not handle freezing as well as the sweet potatoes. Store leftover portions in an airtight, freezer-safe container or Ziploc bag and enjoy them within three months.

How to Reheat: Reheat your CrockPot Sweet Potato Casserole leftovers in the microwave or a CrockPot set to low, depending on how many people you’re serving. Thaw frozen portions overnight in the refrigerator before reheating for the best results.

Recipe Variations

Substitutions: I tend to leave the pecans out of our slow-cooker sweet potato casserole because a few of our loved ones can't eat nuts. I like to serve the pecans in a side dish next to the CrockPot or the serving dish so they can easily add them to their plate if they want them.

You can use heavy cream or milk in your slow-cooker sweet potato casserole.

Vegetarian Option: This Thanksgiving side dish is vegetarian if you use vegetarian marshmallows, as many grocery store brands contain gelatin, an ingredient derived from animals.

Vegan Option: In addition to the guidance for vegetarians, vegans should replace the heavy cream with a plant-based alternative.

Gluten-Free: The ingredients in this classic holiday side dish are typically gluten-free, making it safe for a gluten-free diet. Check for a gluten-free label on each if you are highly sensitive.

Alcohol-Free Option: We don’t use alcohol in our recipe, but we’ve seen other versions that add a splash of bourbon, whiskey, or even rum for a boozy infusion.

Smaller Serving Size + Larger Group/More Servings: The written recipe makes six servings. Scale it up or down to your desired yield, keeping in mind that you may need to work in batches if you scale up.

Make It Spicy: This sweet potato casserole recipe uses hot honey if you’re looking for sweet potatoes with some heat!

Sugar-Free: The written recipe contains 49 grams of sugar per serving. Use sugar-free white sugar, brown sugar, marshmallows, and orange juice with no sugar added to make it sugar-free.

Tips for the Best CrockPot Sweet Potato Casserole

  • Make sure you have a large bowl to hold all the cut sweet potatoes, or add them to the slow cooker as you cut them.
  • We cook on high heat to finish them semi-quickly so we don't have to get up early on Thanksgiving morning. You can cook on low heat for 7-8 hours if you want them to cook longer.

FAQs

Why do you put eggs in sweet potato casserole? ›

A really good sweet potato casserole filling should be light and moist, not dense. If it's dense, then you may not have added an often overlooked ingredient—an egg. An egg adds lift, structure and volume and makes the filling more custard-like.

Why do you soak sweet potatoes before baking? ›

The cold water bath helps rinse the starch off the sweet potatoes so they're a bit more crispy. That said, if you do not have the time, you can still get crispy baked sweet potato fries by using high heat and a little drizzle of olive oil.

How do you make sweet potato casserole not runny? ›

Eggs and cream help stabilize the dish and prevent it from becoming too runny (a common complaint with many sweet potato casserole recipes). Make it as smooth or chunky as you like!

Are candied yams and sweet potato casserole the same thing? ›

You may not want to substitute true yams in your Candied Yams recipe since their flavor isn't the same as the sweet potatoes in the dish. They can be substituted for sweet potatoes in more savory dishes.

How do you thicken up sweet potato casserole? ›

If you are not adding eggs, you can thicken your sweet potato casserole by adding a bit of flour or cornstarch. You will need about 2-3 tablespoons of flour and 1 tablespoon of cornstarch.

How many sweet potatoes is 4 cups? ›

For cooking purposes, 1 pound of sweet potatoes equals about three medium whole, 2 cups mashed or 3½ to 4 cups chopped.

Is it better to boil sweet potatoes before baking? ›

Absolutely not. While many might choose to parboil the sweet potatoes before cooking for a shorter cooking time, we advise against it. Roasting sweet potatoes bring out their caramelized flavor yet leave the inside soft and custardy.

Why soak sweet potatoes in cold water? ›

TIPS & TRICKS to Make this Recipe: The main secrets to achieving that incredible crispy texture, is to soak the cut sweet potatoes in cold water for at least 30 minutes. This helps remove the starch from the sweet potatoes so they´re not limp & soggy.

How long can you leave sweet potatoes soaking in water? ›

Types of Potatoes to Soak

"Sweet potatoes can also be peeled and stored in water for up to 24 hours."

Can I use canned sweet potatoes instead of fresh? ›

Canned or frozen sweet potatoes may be substituted for the fresh form in any recipe calling for cooked sweet potatoes as the starting point. Canned sweet potatoes are generally smaller in diameter because of their better canning qualities.

Why is my sweet potato casserole soggy? ›

If your sweet potato casserole turned out “watery”, its usually because you forgot to add eggs; you didn't let your casserole have enough time to set up after baking or you used fresh sweet potatoes and didn't boil them long enough before mashing.

Are canned yams the same as canned sweet potatoes? ›

Are Yams and Sweet Potatoes the Same? No, yams and sweet potatoes are not the same. Yams have rough, dark brown skin that is often compared to tree bark, and their flesh is dry and starchy like a regular potato. Sweet potatoes have smooth reddish skin, softer flesh (when cooked), and a sweet flavor.

What variety of sweet potato is best for casserole? ›

Jewel. With copper skin and deep-orange flesh that's moist and tender when cooked, the jewel is a go-to potato for traditional baking and casseroles.

Which is healthier, yam or sweet potato? ›

Although both veggies are very close in fiber, protein, vitamin C, and magnesium, sweet potatoes are the healthier option because they are lower in overall calories, lower in carbohydrates, and higher in beta carotene (vitamin A).

What is the purpose of eggs in a baked goods recipe? ›

Eggs play an important role in everything from cakes and cookies to meringues and pastry cream — they create structure and stability within a batter, they help thicken and emulsify sauces and custards, they add moisture to cakes and other baked goods, and can even act as glue or glaze.

Does egg thicken casserole? ›

The proteins in eggs coagulate or set at different temperatures. This results in thickening but it means that eggs must be cooked gently and heated carefully or they will scramble rather than thicken a sauce or other mixture.

What is the purpose of putting an egg in mashed potatoes? ›

Adding egg yolks to a pot of mashed potatoes is an easy, dairy-free texture and taste upgrade that doesn't require any special techniques. The yolks harbor all the flavorful fats and emulsifying components and will thus effectively unify the fat and water in potatoes, translating to a smoother, uniformly creamy pot.

What role does the egg play when used in a breakfast casserole? ›

Whole eggs, egg yolks and egg whites are all used to add structure to batters. The yolk's elevated fat content helps it bind fats and liquids together through what's called an emulsion.
